IGGM Explores GTA 6’s Biggest Changes to the Map, NPC AI, Police Chases, and More

by Streamline

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. As this date approaches, more details about the game are surfacing.

From the open-world environment design to the daily reactions of NPCs, to the police chase mechanics and the interactions between the two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, recent developer interviews and gameplay demos have given us a more concrete understanding of this new title.

Next, let’s take a look at the noteworthy changes that GTA 6 will bring, with IGGM.com as our guide.

A Density-Focused Map

IGGM Explores GTA 6's Biggest Changes to the Map, NPC AI, Police Chases, and More

The map of Leonidas is approximately twice the size of GTA 5’s. The developers also stated that the land area, including Vice City and the surrounding area, is close to the combined playable maps of GTA 5, GTA 4, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, size isn’t the only focus of this map. GTA 6 adds a wealth of explorable indoor spaces, with back alleys, residences, and other locations featuring more detailed design. Even seemingly ordinary houses may contain family photos, household items, and other environmental clues.

For example, in a randomly entered house, one room might have a photo of a dog, and the next room might already be ransacked by that same dog.

Jason will also exhibit aversion to certain smells. This reaction, initially likely designed for specific scenarios, has been expanded into a more general system. So, when Jason enters certain houses, he’ll wrinkle his nose and back away, even though no script was written for that particular scene.

NPCs are no longer just background figures

Grand Theft Auto VI features approximately 600,000 animations for NPCs, attempting to elicit different reactions from pedestrians through personality traits and behavioral logic. The demographics and behavioral tendencies of different neighborhoods also vary.

IGGM.com noted that the way NPCs react to weapons is a significant change. In previous games, players could pull out shotguns on the street, and pedestrians typically wouldn’t react until the player aimed further.

The new game will trigger varying degrees of reaction based on whether a weapon is held in hand or on the back, and whether bystanders witness the action. Some pedestrians may actively avoid the area, some may run away, and others may confront the player.

This design makes street behavior more than just a simple crime trigger; it’s influenced by witnesses, NPC personalities, and player actions.

Jason and Lucia: Diverse Relationship Development

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia

GTA 6 continues the dual-protagonist switching mechanism, but Jason and Lucia’s relationship differs from the interactions between the protagonists in previous games. Their relationship is affected by daily activities.

Taking a walk together, cycling, going to the gym, or even committing a joint robbery of GTA 6 money can all increase their intimacy level. Players can also maintain their relationship as criminal partners or friends, without having to develop it into a romantic relationship.

The developers haven’t explicitly stated whether the two can marry, but indicated that their relationship can be shaped by the player to a certain extent. Even if their relationship changes, the two will remain connected throughout the main story.

Heat System: Police will pursue players based on the evidence

GTA 6 Police Chases

This is one of the most significant changes to the series’ underlying logic in Grand Theft Auto 6. The traditional wanted stars still exist, but each star now carries more information:

  • A solid white star indicates that the police are currently in direct line of sight.

  • A flashing white star means you are out of sight.

  • A hollow star indicates that a crime has been reported, but the police do not yet have a description of the suspect.

  • A red wanted star indicates that you have temporarily shaken off the pursuit but are still within the search area.

On the minimap, the markers for police and enemies have been removed; players need to use the Focus ability to detect threats behind walls.

In addition, the studio has added a Heat system. This system tracks whether the police have obtained surveillance footage, know the suspect’s appearance and clothing, possess weapon information, and whether the player’s vehicle has revealed their identity. This information is presented as icons on the HUD, allowing players to understand what clues they have left behind.

Therefore, escaping is no longer just about waiting for wanted stars to disappear. IGGM.com reminds you that you also need to consider how to reduce the information the police have, such as changing clothes, discarding weapons, changing vehicles, or, if appropriate, having Jason and Lucia separate.

This also means that successfully leaving a crime scene doesn’t necessarily mean complete safety. If the police have enough information, even if you temporarily escape capture, you may still need to deal with any remaining clues or security.

As police pursuit capabilities upgrade, if you want to accumulate in-game resources more safely and quickly, you can also choose to buy GTA 6 cash for character development and a smoother gameplay experience when exploring the open world.

Car Theft and Robbery: Pre-emptive Assessment Becomes More Important

The crime loop in Grand Theft Auto VI relies more heavily on pre-emptive assessment than in its predecessors. Stealing a car is no longer a simple matter of pulling the door open and driving away: the WAINK app on your phone can scan the target vehicle, displaying its security level, required tools, and tracker level.

High-end cars may be equipped with advanced trackers; even if you’ve already driven the car away, if you slow down long enough, it will send its location to the police, forcing you to keep accelerating towards the disposal point.

Another app, Scooter Bros., offers a paid car delivery service: pay some GTA 6 cash, and someone will deliver your specified vehicle to you within seconds, then leave in the same scooter they used to arrive in.

However, if you’re in the middle of a robbery, calling for a car is obviously too late. IGGM.com suggests either parking your getaway car on a street corner beforehand or hijacking a random vehicle on the spot and gambling that it has no tracker, a full tank of gas, and the driver isn’t armed.

Random events also add variety of street activities. For example, other drivers might initiate street race challenges; during motorcycle escapes, players can switch roles, letting AI take over driving while they control the passenger to shoot at pursuers.

Weather and day/night cycles are more detailed

GTA 6’s weather system is no longer limited to simple states like sunny, cloudy, and rainy. Clouds are affected by factors such as wind, humidity, fog, time, and season.

After a heavy rain, roads may remain wet, building surfaces may drip water, and different materials dry at different rates. Waves can affect boat travel, and islands and buildings can obstruct the flow of water and alter local water conditions.

Airplanes or helicopters traversing severe weather may be impacted by air currents, and prolonged exposure to extreme conditions can even cause minor damage. Pedestrians will also seek shelter depending on the weather.

The day-night cycle has also been slowed down – sunsets last longer and nights are longer. Road and highway widths have also been adjusted to match the denser urban environment and more realistic pedestrian behavior.

The game’s bus and rail systems have also been meticulously crafted. The development team even specifically tested whether buses could function as expected. These designs indicate that players, in addition to completing missions and engaging in criminal activities, can also choose to use public transportation, explore the city, or experience other daily activities.

Summary

GTA 6’s main upgrades can be summarized in three aspects.

First, the map is not only larger but also boasts more explorable indoor spaces and environmental detail. Second, NPCs, weather, and the police system will react more specifically to player actions, making the crime and exploration process more varied. Finally, the Heat system, and the relationship between Jason and Lucia add more layers to character behavior and story development.

Whether these changes will have a lasting impact on the full game remains to be seen until its official release. However, based on the currently released demos, GTA 6’s design focus is no longer just on increasing the amount of content, but on creating a closer connection between different systems.
